Middlesbrough 2-0 Northampton Town

The Cobblers are out of the Carling Cup following last nights’ 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough. Gareth Southgate’s Premier League outfit were too strong and goals from Fabio Rochemback and Dong Gook Lee were enough to win it despite a good effort from the Town.

Young Alex Dyer was included in the starting line up for the Cobblers with Ian Henderson also included up front with Poul Hubertz. Gareth Southgate sent out a strong side including the likes of Rochemback, Luke Young, Tuncay and Stewart Downing.

The Cobblers seemed unlucky to not be going into half time in front as Ian Henderson hit the post before Alex Dyer and Joe Burnell also went close.

But it was Boro’ who showed their Premier League class eventually and it took two good strikes to finish us off. First, Rochemback struck a 35 yard free kick low past Mark Bunn in the 53rd minute. Just ten minutes later and the game was all but won as Dong Gook Lee curled home from the edge of the area.

We still had chances to get back into the game and Henderson agonisingly had his shot cleared off the line by Luke Young. Boro’s last effort was a header from substitute Mido that Bunn did well to save.

So a defeat and exit from the Carling Cup but by no means a poor showing and we’d rather take three points from Orient on Saturday than win at the Riverside.

COBBLERS: Bunn, Crowe, Jones, Hughes, Doig, Dyer (Brett Johnson 80), Brad Johnson, Burnell (Aiston 67), Holt (Larkin 67), Henderson, Hubertz
