No Saints 3-5 Time For Heroes

In yet another hard fought game of near misses for No Saints, we missed several good chances, hit the post twice and just missed out on the final ball as frustratingly we dropped into the bottom two.

No Saints took the lead through a good long range effort from Jamie but Heroes were back level soon after before taking the lead themselves with some good finishing. At the other end we were having our usual bad luck in front of goal until Abib found a way through to fire home his ninth goal of the season. Heroes hit back to make it 3-2 but we equalised before half-time through Phil.

Despite a good effort in the second 20 minutes we couldn't make some good moves count and Time for Heroes ran out winners by adding two more goals including one screamer from the side of the pitch.

We're now deep in a relegation scrap as Red Star Five gained an automatic 3-0 win as their opponents, Kickabouts, didn't show up again. Red Star move above us in the table and it could come down to the game between us in a couple of weeks to decide who is relegated!

The Midweek Review...30/10/08

Another busy week at Sixfields to ponder today as two more wins moves us into the top half of the table for the first time in months whilst the transfer window comes to an end tomorrow and there’s still no sign of the mystery striker.

Two home games brought six valuable points home this week and following on from the 1-0 win at Gillingham the victories were very different but both so priceless in the race to escape the doldrums of a relegation scrap.

Orient saw us full of flair and attacking fluency and the most pleasing thing wasn’t the fact that we won the game but the fact that we did it in style, with a reported fifteen passes in one move, unheard of for us this season! Poul Hubertz returned from suspension to net the penalty and how good it is to have the big man back in the side following three games without his services. Ryan Gilligan also won rave reviews for a workmanlike performance along side him.

It was a great shame to lose Daniel Jones back to Wolves as his loan spell finally came to an end. Someone of his undoubted quality will be missed but it’s understandable that Wolves want him back and also for the player to get a shot at Championship football. Jones came off the bench for the last twenty minutes or so last night so good luck to him in the future.

So there was just one change to make for last night’s game but despite losing Jones we pulled off a very different type of win as Brighton fought with us and between themselves to try and stop our attack on the top half. But the solitary Mark Hughes header, his first goal of the season, was enough and despite a performance level lower than Friday night we scrapped out the win and it’s those sorts of games that will make all the difference come the end of the season.

The transfer window slams shut tomorrow at midnight and there’s still no news of the big signing, being touted by many as Simon Cox. Cox is seemingly holding out for Swindon though and we could well miss out. Either way we have to hope that Stuart Gray has a back up plan if Plan A doesn’t come off.

The next three fixtures will be extremely tough. Swindon are going well and will be a hard nut to crack at The County Ground whilst we all know about the quality of Leeds despite their recent slump. Yeovil will then of course see us up against a certain former striker of ours. The points return from these three games could see if we’re good enough to make the step up to an established top half team and maybe even pushing for the playoffs or whether we once again have to lift ourselves out of the lower regions of the league.

It’s a very open league at the moment with seven points separating us from the bottom four and eight between us and third place so we’re once again in a position where it could go either way.

Up The Cobblers!

No Saints vs Time For Heroes Preview...

So it's onwards with the 5-a-side malarky on Wednesday evening with Time For Heroes our next opponents. Heroes were beaten by No Saints in our last meeting 7-5 so another tight game is expected.

Dave and Andy are both missing for the game but newcomer Tim could return alongside Will who made a successful return last week. Time For Heroes sit second in the table with No Saints in 4th, four points behind so it's a big game at either end of the table going into the home straight of the jdfives winter season.

Northampton Town 1-0 Brighton and Hove Albion

The Cobblers moved up to eleventh in the League One table this evening with a single goal win over Brighton to make it three straight league wins without conceding a goal. Mark Hughes headed his first goal of the season to win the game at Sixfields to lift us into the top half.

Jonathon Hayes replaced the departed Daniel Jones in the starting line-up in Stuart Gray’s only change from the Friday night win over Leyton Orient.

It was Brighton who started the strongest and Nathan Elder forced Mark Bunn into a good save early on before Dean Cox hit the rebound wide. Jason Crowe went close after breaking from midfield and shooting over before Bunn was called into action once again, this time tipping a header from David Martot over.

Nicky Forster’s shot on the half hour mark hit the under side of the crossbar and came down but didn’t cross the line before Ryan Gilligan headed over at the other end. Brett Johnson then had a shot cleared off the line after a Danny Jackman corner.

But we did have the lead a couple of minutes before half time. Danny Jackman lined up a free kick, whipped it in and it was met by the head of Mark Hughes who nodded home his first goal of the season to give us a half time lead.

Poul Hubertz had the first chance of the second half as he played a neat one two with Danny Jackman before heading over the bar. Giles Coke left the field to be replaced by Andy Holt before Hughes went close to adding his second of the game with a downward header but the ball bounced down and over.

After two Brighton players started to fight between each other, earning goalkeeper Michael Kuipers a yellow card, the visitors had a goal ruled out for offside.

Mark Bunn was in fine form again with ten minutes to go as he denied Dean Cox from a free kick. But after four minutes of injury time, it was all over and three vital points were in the bag once again, lifting the Cobblers up into the top half. The other sides around us still have games in hand but for now we can enjoy being in the upper reaches of the table once again.

Brighton and Hove Albion (H) Preview

Brighton and Hove Albion are the visitors to Sixfields this evening with a win for the Cobblers taking us into the top half of the table. There’s still no sign of the illusive forward that has been talked about for the last couple of weeks but we have momentum from two wins in succession at Gillingham and at home to Leyton Orient.

Daniel Jones has complete his loan spell and returned to Wolves so Andy Holt should come into midfield. Ryan Gilligan is expected to resume his role up front after a positive performance in the 2-0 win over Orient on Friday night.

Brighton may hand a start to new signing Glenn Murray but suspension rules out Dean Hammond and Gary Hart. Joel Lynch is out with a hamstring injury while Alex Revell is set for a late fitness test.

Northampton Town 2-0 Leyton Orient

Goals from Giles Coke and Poul Hubertz gave the Cobblers an impressive Friday night victory at Sixfields as playoff chasing Leyton Orient were swept aside. The win means that the Cobblers have recorded back-to-back victories for the first time since October and also kept a clean sheet for the second successive game.

Poul Hubertz returned to the starting line-up after completing his suspension in place of Dean Bowditch who returned to Ipswich last week.

Orient had the first effort of note as top scorer Adam Boyd latched on to a cut back from Adam Chambers but saw his shot sail over the bar. Ryan Gilligan had the Cobblers’ first shot on goal, hitting a good effort just wide on ten minutes.

Five minutes later and we were in front as good work by Hubertz created a chance for Giles Coke. Coke, breaking from midfield met the ball and finished well past visiting keeper Stuart Nelson to net his first goal for the club.

With growing momentum, the Cobblers began to play some good football and created a couple of good passing moves with Danny Jackman going close at the end of one of those moves. Just before half-time Mark Bunn was forced into a fine save from Adam Boyd after the ball hit the striker on the head and was diverted towards goal but Bunn was equal to it to make sure went into half-time in front.

The Cobblers kept the momentum going in the second half and limited Orient to few chances on goal. Adam Boyd was blocked well by Mark Hughes in one attack, the Cobblers defender making a superb challenge to deny the front man.

With twenty minutes to go, Hubertz headed a Daniel Jones free kick into the goalkeepers’ arms but the big man would go on to find the net just minutes later. Tamira Mkandawire floored Jason Crowe in the area and Hubertz stepped up to double the advantage from the penalty spot.

The lead was never in doubt after that and the Cobblers completed a fine week with another big win. We can now relax and watch the others try to play catch up tomorrow afternoon!

Leyton Orient (H) Preview...

The Cobblers host Leyton Orient on Friday night as we look to build on the 1-0 win at Gillingham last weekend. The O’s have a good record at Sixfields though and are fighting for a playoff place following a good first half of the season. The Cobblers are in 15th place going into the game and recorded a 2-2 draw at Brisbane Road earlier in the season.

Team News

The Cobblers welcome back Poul Hubertz after a three game suspension and the big Dane is expected to go right back into the starting line-up for the clash. Adebayo Akinfenwa is expected to play some part in the game but could play some part. Liam Dolman is fit again and will challenge for a place in defence while Chris Doig is back in training but is still a couple of weeks away from returning to action.

Orient are without Alton Thelwell, Jabo Ibehre, Clayton Fortune and Wayne Gray but captain Stephen Purches could return after missing last week’s victory over Luton Town with a thigh injury. On loan Andy Barcham should be fit enough to play up front for the O’s.

The Story So Far…Leyton Orient in 2007/08…

Orient were one of the early pace setters in League One, winning five of their opening six games. Their only early set back was the 2-2 draw with the Cobblers as the O’s came from two goals down to earn a point. Their first defeat came in the 4-2 reverse at home to Hartlepool United in mid September. Orient bounced back in the last game of the month with a 3-2 win at Bristol Rovers, Jason Demetriou with the winner ten minutes from time.

October began poorly and they suffered defeats at Gillingham (3-1) and at home to Swansea (5-0) before picking up a point in a 1-1 draw at Leeds. Their only win of the month came at home to Port Vale as they came from behind to win 3-1 before the month ended with a 4-2 defeat at Doncaster.

An early goal from Charlie Daniels gave Orient a 1-0 home win over Oldham before draws with Swindon and Brighton. The O’s won at Huddersfield but disappointment followed in the F.A. Cup as they crashed out at Bristol Rovers in a First Round Replay, 6-5 on penalties.

At the start of December, Orient were beaten by London rivals Millwall, 1-0 before seeing of Cheltenham 2-0 at Brisbane Road. An inconsistent month saw defeat at Carlisle, a home draw with Yeovil and a loss at Bournemouth before 2007 ended with a 1-1 draw at Hartlepool.

The new year began with a draw as well as Gillingham held out for a 0-0 draw at Brisbane Road before Tranmere were hammered 3-0 to push Orient back up the table. After a 4-0 defeat at Forest, Orient hit back with a 2-1 home win over Luton last weekend. The win took them back up to sixth in the League One table.

07/04/07: ORIENT 0-2 COBBLERS

An early Simon Cox goal and an own goal just before the break from Aiden Palmer gave the Cobblers a vital win on the way to League One survival last season.

John Mackie and Lee Steele give Orient a two-goal lead before The Cobblers come back through Andy Kirk and Ashley Westwood. But Steele scores in stoppage time to win a thriller for Orient.

No Saints 1-4 Paultons F.C.

No Saints fell to defeat last night as Paultons kept up their 100% record by seeing us off 4-1 in the latest League One tussle. After taking an early lead, Paultons made it 2-0 half way through the first half and despite a goal from our leading front man Abib, we slipped eventually to a 4-1 defeat.

The game also included a Blue Card for one of the Paultons players but despite him being in the Sin Bin for 4 minutes we couldn’t convert our chances and once again hit the post and the bar on a couple of occasions.

The game saw the return of Will and also new signing Tim so as the squad grows we’ll hopefully do as best we can to remain in League One. The result leaves us in 4th with the bottom two sides being relegated and the top two promoted. With four games still to play, it’s still all to play for and next week we take on Time For Heroes, one of the sides we beat last time out.

The Midweek Review...23/01/08...

There’s a lot of mystery around Sixfields at the moment as the transfer window brings about a signing that Stuart Gray claims will excite the Cobblers fans and make us very happy. David Cardoza echoed these words but we still do not know the identity of the mystery man. I take a look at the rumours flying around in this week’s Midweek Review and look back on our first win of 2008.

When Daniel Jones struck in the third minute of the game at Gillingham with a delightful free kick, any Cobblers fan would be forgiven for thinking that we would need another one to have a chance of taking home the points. It had been seventeen games since we last kept a clean sheet, way back in October at Oldham but aided by the increasingly impressive Brett Johnson we fought out a solid display and held on for a massive win.

Johnson is winning more and more good reviews as the weeks go on and surely we will be offering the youngster a contract at the end of this month when his current deal runs out.

Some negatives despite the win were the missed opportunities at the other end but once Adebayo Akinfenwa gets fit again and perhaps another name is added up front we’ll be taking those chances and moving up the table. Hoobs returns this week against Orient and to say we’ve missed his presence during his three game ban would be very much an understatement.

Mystery surrounds the latest Cobblers signing that Stuart Gray is lining up as the transfer window rolls on. Talk is that we are about to smash our current transfer record of £165,000 (Josh Low in 2003) to sign someone that “the fans will be very excited about” and someone who will lead our line for years to come. Some of the rumoured players are…

Simon Cox: Signed on loan last season at Sixfields and helped us to safety with some vital goals. Has been on loan at League One rivals Swindon Town for the first half of this season and a proposed permanent move to the County Ground seems to have stalled. Cox has scored eight times for Swindon this season and could represent good value.

Darren Huckerby: The Norwich man has scored just three times for Norwich this season and may be persuaded to drop down a division.

Leon Clarke: Hit eight goals in sixteen starts whilst on loan with Southend earlier this season and could be wrestled away from Sheffield Wednesday. At 22, he is the perfect age to be leading the line.

Malcolm Christie: Rumours have been flying about that the former Middlesbrough man could be on his way to Sixfields but his current position of being without a club rules him out of any move for a fee.

Kenny Deuchar: The good doctor is back in the Gretna first team after a loan spell here last season but could still be persuaded into a move to English football full time.

Carl Cort: Last seen at Leicester, the former Wimbledon man could be a good signing at our level but at the age of 30 may not be the age to lead our front line for years to come as Gray is claiming.

And the outsiders…

Andrei Shevchenko: Unsettled at Chelsea, the Ukranian would certainly excite the Cobblers fans. He may have to take a wage drop though.

Stan Collymore: Not doing much at the moment and could be somewhere at the back of Stuart Gray’s old contact book.

Neil Grayson: Still playing in non-league and a return for Larry would be like Keegan going back to Newcastle for the Cobblers’ faithful!

The rumours are bound to continue right up until the end of January but it seems that Gray and Cardoza have lined up something major…whether it pleases the Cobblers fans as much as it seems to please them we wait to see!

So it’s Orient this Friday night and under the floodlights we could move nine points clear of the drop zone before the others try to play catch up on Saturday. If we can establish that big a gap for a few weeks we can start to look the other way and aim higher. Orient seem to be back on form after a bit of a slump took them down the table a bit so they’ll be tough opposition and their Sixfields record is impressive.

But the return of Hubertz could be just at the right time and he’ll surely go right back into the starting line-up with Bowditch now back at Ipswich. With two home games in the next week we could possibly pull well clear of danger. The word “possibly” should be the big word there though!

Up The Cobblers!

No Saints vs Paultons F.C. Preview...

So as we pass the half-way mark in the season, the mighty whites come up against top club Paultons as we look to avenge the opening day defeat in which we lost 4-3. Since then, Paultons have won every game and sit eight points clear at the top of League One.

No Saints have had a topsy turvey season but despite three defeats out of five, we're just a point off the promotion places so everything to play for going into the game.

The game sees the return of Will from injury and he could fill an outfield role while his hand fully recovers. Nathan is away long term on international duty but we could well be looking at a strong squad of eight again as we look to get back to winning ways.

Town line up Hungarian defender

The Cobblers are expected to offer a contract to Hungarian international defender Gabor Gyepes today after the player impressed boss Stuart Gray during a recent trial. Gyepes, 26, is a centre half and has seventeen international caps with his country.

Gyepes started his career at Ferencvaros, including appearances in the Champions League, moved to Wolves in 2005 but injury ended his time at Molineux. Stuart Gray is likely to offer him a contract initially until the end of this season after he played in this week’s 4-2 reserve team defeat to Peterborough United at Sixfields.

Whilst at Wolves, Gyepes made nineteen league appearances but his career in England seemed to be ended by a serious cruciate knee injury that kept him out of the game for nearly a year.

Bowidtch returns to Ipswich after Cobblers loan ends

Dean Bowditch has returned to Ipswich Town upon completion of his two-month loan spell with the Cobblers. Bowditch, who scored two goals in his spell at Sixfields, has returned to his parent club to fight for a first team place.

Cobblers’ boss Stuart Gray said, “Dean said he wanted to return to Ipswich to fight for a first team place. Of course we thank him for his efforts and wish him well back at Portman Road.”

Bowditch struck in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth in December and more recently in the 1-1 home draw with Millwall. Despite his departure, Stuart Gray will have the services of Poul Hubertz again for Friday nights’ home game with Leyton Orient after the big front man completed his suspension by sitting out of the 1-0 win at Gillingham on Saturday.

Merryment in Upper Bucklebury...

More birthday celebrations were on the agenda for this weekend as we followed up Dave's birthday surprise on Thursday night with a weekend in Martha's parent's home of Upper Bucklebury.

Saturday night was spent at Martha's favourite restaurant of Nandos and with it being my first visit for a proper meal I was immediately hooked. It may be very wrong that I was craving it again come Sunday evening!

After a relaxing Saturday evening with a film and endless treats, we were treated to a loevly roast dinner from Martha's parents on Sunday afternoon as cakes for both Martha and Dave were shared out for desserts. Blown out after the meal, we played "Anti Monopoly" whilst some of us fell asleep during the afternoon to prepare for the journey home.

So another really good weekend away and it'll be weird to spend next weekend actually staying in Southampton following trips to Leeds, London and Upper Bucklebury in the first few weekends of 2008. Still, we do have the big party at Soul Cellar planned for next Saturday so it certainly won't be a quiet one!

Happy Birthday to Dave and Martha :)

Gillingham 0-1 Northampton Town

A free kick from Daniel Jones was enough to give The Cobblers a single goal win at Gillingham as we put a bit of breathing space between ourselves and the bottom four. Jones’ strike came in just the third minute and we held on to a priceless three points at The Priestfield Stadium.

New signing Adebayo Akinfenwa started on the bench for Stuart Gray’s men whilst Mark Little started at right back again. Liam Dolman sat out after suffering a dead leg in the 1-1 draw with Hartlepool last weekend and Mark Hughes was recalled. Ryan Gilligan came in for the departing Andy Kirk and Joe Burnell returned to midfield in place of Leicester loan man Jonathon Hayes.

The Cobblers were in front with their first real effort on goal as a handball led to a good position for a shot on goal and Daniel Jones duly obliged by curling the ball home past a motionless Simon Royce in the Gillingham goal.

Gary Mulligan tested Mark Bunn for the first time with a shot on the turn before Jason Crowe hit the home sides’ crossbar with a header from Danny Jackman’s cross. Back at the other end, Delroy Facey headed wide.

Gillingham then hit the crossbar as Adam Miller beat Bunn but not the woodwork with a chipped effort and the ball bounced away to safety. In the last real shot of the half, Danny Jackman latched onto a knock down fro Ryan Gilligan but fired over.

At the start of the second half, Gilligan could have made it 2-0 but after moving onto a pass from Dean Bowditch and turning his defender shot just wide of the far post. Dean Bowditch headed wide from a Jones cross on the hour before Bunn had to save well from Mark Bentley shortly afterwards.

Giles Coke left the pitch to be replaced by Colin Larkin while Ian Henderson replaced Dean Bowditch in the Cobblers attack late on. Larkin and Gilligan both had chances to double our lead but after a late flurry of attacks from the home side without success and after five minutes of stoppage time, we had sealed an important three points.

With two home games in the next ten days, it’s a vital period of the season and this could yet prove to be a pivotal weekend as teams around us slipped up and helped lift us to 14th in League One.

Gillingham (A) Preview

The Cobblers head to Gillingham tomorrow with a new look front line. Leading scorer Andy Kirk moved to Yeovil on Thursday but Adebayo Akinfenwa joins the club to fill some of the gap left by Kirk’s departure. Last season the Cobblers won 1-0 at The Priestfield and anything like that again would be a massive boost to the season as we slip closer and closer to the bottom four.

Team News

The Cobblers are waiting on the fitness of defender Liam Dolman ahead of the game after he picked up a dead leg against Hartlepool United at the weekend. Poul Hubertz sits out in the final game of his suspension while Chris Doig remains on the sidelines. Adebayo Akinfenwa could make his debut after signing for the club today.

Adam Bygrave will play his final game for Gillingham before returning to Reading from his loan spell while an appeal against the recent sending off of Adam Miller was successful so he should play.

The Story So Far…Gillingham in 2007/08

Gillingham sit just above the Cobblers in League One as Mark Stimson looks to lead his side away from a relegation battle.

The season began in poor fashion as the Gills lost all three of their games in August, going down to Cheltenham (1-0), Tranmere (2-0) and Luton (3-1).

But September brought their first win of the season as two goals from Gary Mulligan saw off newly promoted Walsall 2-1 at the Priestfield. Defeat at Southend was followed by another home win, this time against Brighton before The Gills were hammered 4-0 at Nottingham Forest. A 1-1 home draw with Leeds rounded off the month.

Home form continued to keep them going at the start of October as high flying Leyton Orient were beaten 3-1. A 5-0 hammering at Swindon was followed by a home draw with Millwall but the away form was still suffering as defeat at Carlisle meant that they still hadn’t recorded a win on the road. October ended with a 3-2 home win over Bristol Rovers as Chris Dickson’s goal in the 89th minute sealed the win.

November saw draws at Swansea and at home to Doncaster before they lost at Yeovil (2-1) and won at home to Hartlepool (2-1). Added to that was an F.A. Cup First Round defeat at League Two side Barnet.

On 4th December, the club finally recorded their first away win of the season as goals from Mark Bentley and two from Chris Dickson saw them win 3-2 at Crewe. Ironically, just as away form picked up, home form faltered as they lost 2-1 to Port Vale at the Priestfield. Defeat at Bournemouth and a draw with Southend on Boxing Day was followed by a morale-boosting end to 2007 as they beat Nottingham Forest 3-0.

2008 began with a goalless draw at Leyton Orient and after a couple of weeks’ break from league football, The Gills won 3-1 at Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Andy Kirk’s first half goal gives the Cobblers all three points in the early days of last season.

24/08/04: GILLINGHAM 1-2 COBBLERS (League Cup First Round)

Eric Sabin and Scott McGleish put the Cobblers in front in the first half and a second half striker from Mamdy Sidibe isn’t enough to stop us from progressing.

08/09/98: GILLINGHAM 2-3 COBBLERS

In an entertaining game at the Priestfield Stadium, Paul Smith put the Gills ahead from the penalty spot before Roy Hunter equalised for the Cobblers. Carlo Corazzin put us in front before Smith equalised just two minutes later. But with ten minutes to go, a Duncan Spedding bullet won the game for the Cobblers.

Cobblers seal Akinfenwa deal

The Cobblers have signed 25-year-old striker Adebayo Akinfenwa on a short-term deal until the end of the season. The pacy and powerful front man has most recently been with Millwall after rejecting a contract from Swansea at the end of last season.

Akinfenwa began his career in non-league but made his mark with Torquay United after signing with the Gulls in 2004. He scored fourteen goals in League One before moving to Swansea for £85,000 in 2005. He helped them to reach the League One playoff final in his first season with the club and scored fourteen league goals in all with the welsh club.

The striker rejected a new contract with The Swans and joined Millwall following his recovery from injury. Akinfenwa has been allocated squad number ten.

Kirk set for Yeovil move

Cobblers top scorer Andy Kirk is set to join League One rivals Yeovil Town upon completion of a medical this morning. Kirk has hit eight league goals this season but has struggled to find the net as late but it looks like for the second season in a row we’ll be waving goodbye to our top scorer in the January transfer window!

Kirk, 28, has hit 36 goals for the club in 94 starts but Cobblers boss Stuart Gray said that it may be time for a fresh start for both Kirk and Northampton Town.

Gray said, “I think it’s a good move for all parties, It’s not a cost cutting exercise but a footballing decision and it does free up some money for me to strengthen the team.”

“Andy is a goal scorer but for whatever reason he hasn’t scored for us in the league since October. I think he will benefit from a fresh start and he has got some security for his family with a longer contract.”

Gray went on to say that he has two strikers in mind as he looks to replace Kirk and hopes that the deals can be done quickly.

“I am looking to bring two strikers in,” he said. “Hopefully they will both sign before the weekend, one will be a permanent signing and the other a loan.”

“We need someone who has good ball retention and we also need someone in with pace who can run in behind defenders as well. Obviously they need to be able to score goals as well and that is the hardest part of the game.”

“We won’t rush things and get the wrong player, we will keep working to bring in the players we want, but I am hopeful it will be sooner rather than later.”

No Saints 2-4 Kickabouts

In yet another close game, No Saints were beaten as we let a 2-1 lead slip late on. The result leaves us with three defeats and two wins from the first half of the League One season.

Following a fast paced opening, I struck my first goal of the season from Jamie's quick thinking from a corner and the ball sneaked into the corner. We held the lead just as last week against Red Star but again were pegged back to 1-1.

Abib forced his way through 27 challenges to finally slot the ball home and give us a 2-1 lead but it wasn't to be as Kickabouts finished the game well and powered home after their second equaliser to eventually win 4-2 and leave us in mid-table at the half way mark.

The Midweek Review...16/01/08

A second successive 1-1 draw at Sixfields leaves the Cobblers in a treacherous position going into this weekends’ trip to Gillingham. We sit just five points above the drop zone with most around us having two games in hand and with time running out in the transfer window it’ll be a nervous couple of weeks at the club.

By all accounts, Hartlepool was a dire game and we once again missed the presence of Hoobs up front. The big man’s absence is leaving a big hole up front and playing the same game as usual isn’t the best way forward without that outlet. Andy Kirk and Dean Bowditch are similar types of player to one another and hoofing the ball long to them just won’t work.

Congratulations to Liam Dolman on his first senior goal though and at least it helped us to a share of the spoils. Other positives were Giles Coke getting through the ninety minutes and the debuts of new loanees Mark Little and Jonathon Hayes. Hayes could have scored with one of his first touches while Little put in a positive shift at right back.

The rumour mill once again links Andy Kirk with a move away from Sixfields with Millwall the latest to put in an offer according to some. Last season we sold top scorer Scott McGleish but reinforcements from the loan market saw us through to safety. Selling Kirk would be a bit of a mistake even if he hasn’t scored for a good few weeks. He can put the ball in the back of the net and when partnered with Hoobs can link up well.

Something we may have to look into is freshening up the attack and Stuart Gray has already hinted at signing another forward. Hoobs will more than likely be suspended again before too long and we maybe need to look at brining in someone of his ilk to shake things up a bit when he’s away.

Gillingham isn’t the nicest places to go on a cold January afternoon with its open seating area similar to the Withdean Stadium at Brighton a dismal place to sit and watch football. I guess at least at the Priestfreld you can actually see the game! It’ll be another tricky one but a game that we really need to get something from. Defeat would send us ever closer to the bottom four and set up a second relegation fight in succession.

The season is very much looking like the 2002/03 season when Kevan Broadhurst took us to the top half of the table before we fell greatly in mid-season. Broadhurst was sacked and you only have to mention the name of Terry Fenwick to send shivers down the spine of Cobblers fans as we remember the decline and relegation that followed. No such mistake as sacking Gray should be made this time around and his job should certainly be safe. More signings to bolster the squad would be very nice though!

Just a final note on some people writing into newspapers and flooding message boards about the atmosphere at Sixfields being “ruined” by the family like feel to it. When I was young, I went to my first game with both my Pap and my Dad in a picture of a family tradition and if it wasn’t for them taking me along I could well have ended up “supporting” a Premiership side like so many others in Northampton at the time rather than choosing a side battling for their existence. If there’s a family atmosphere at Sixfields then it should be heralded and not looked down upon as the kids are the future fans of the club while their kids will follow suit. Sixfields is not a great place for atmosphere in a regular game like Hartlepool, not helped by the small number of away fans but we know when we want it to be it can be great so let’s stop blaming the families and get behind the team!

Up The Cobblers!

No Saints vs Kickabouts Preview

No Saints approach the half way mark of the season tonight, taking on Kickabouts knowing that a win could leaves us in the top two at half way!

After two wins and two defeats from our opening four games, we’re in a very good position following last seasons’ promotion but Kickabouts will be looking to pick up their first win of the season. They sit bottom of the league on one point but this is largely down to them not turning up for two of their four games so far, resulting in automatic defeats.

Last week they did show and lost out 4-3 to league leaders Paultons so will be a tough test of the gutsy No Saints as we look to use all our metal to continue our path through the season.

To think we could be in the top two by the end of tonight is a massive incentive but either way we seem to be in the tightest of all the jdfives leagues. Nathan is still away long term while Will isn’t ready to return as yet. But hopefully the other seven will be all ready to go despite Jamie complaining of a toothache last night.

London weekender!

The weekends of madness continued this week as we headed up to London for a random stroll around and a couple of nice meals.

Ti’s friends, Nikki and Christian, had very nicely agreed to put us up for Saturday night so Ti and I travelled up to London with Jamie and Anna and planned a roam around the capital for a relaxing day out. Jamie and Anna’s excuse for the trip up was that they were celebrating their one year anniversary so congratulations to them and so nice to see them both so happy a year on!

We went our separate ways and Ti and I headed for the Tate Modern after dropping our overnight things off in New Malden. The Tate was a nice way to relax into the weekend and to escape the madness of London on a Saturday afternoon! Although there were plenty of people there, it was still a calming atmosphere to chill out in.

Heading off to Camden was next and I was quite proud to only spend £10 in a very cool photo and frame of Stonehenge that now sits on my bedroom wall. Ti was fortunate to come across a closing down dale with lots of cheap, pretty things in to take home!

After a quick coffee, we headed to Chinatown for dinner. It was my first look at Chinatown and we picked quite a crazy restaurant for my first visit. I can’t recall the name of it but it housed one of the most eccentric waitresses you’re ever likely to meet as she screamed at anyone who walked in the door and at the smallest hint that you’d finished your meal she would yell “FINISHED?” at them in order to make space!

The other workers looked on bemused and slightly scared as she went about her routine but it was certainly entertaining until I got the brunt of her anger by taking my debit card out of the machine too early. We were shoved out of the restaurant and headed for safer grounds and some sleep!

We met up again with Jamie and Anna on Sunday for a pub lunch before heading home weary and tired after the latest in the road trip diaries! Luckily I have a day off today to recover which is well needed!

Northampton Town 1-1 Hartlepool United

The Cobblers were denied all three points at Sixfields yesterday as Hartlepool struck on the brink of half time to take home a share of the spoils in a disappointing afternoon of football.

Stuart Gray began with new faces in the starting line-up as Giles Coke made his first start for the first team after a lengthy spell out injured while Mark Little and Jonathon Hayes both made their debuts after joining on loan from Wolves and Leicester respectively this week. Daniel Jones returned from suspension, replacing Andy Holt.

Hayes had a chance to mark his debut with a goal early on but his shot at the far post went wide of the mark. The Cobblers did have the lead on fifteen minutes, though, following a corner, as Liam Dolman pounced on an Andy Kirk knock down to fire home his first senior goal.

David Foley twice went close to equalising for the visitors but his first shot went wide and his second was saved well by Mark Bunn. After a poor first half, they did have a leveller though as Ben Clark found space to strike past Bunn from twelve yards out with just seconds of the half to go.

Mark Hughes, dropped to the bench from the start of the game, replaced goal scorer Dolman at half time after Dolman had suffered a dead leg when celebrating his goal!

Danny Jackman had the best of the efforts in a dismal opening to the second half but his shot was deflected wide before Ian Henderson and Ryan Gilligan came on for Andy Kirk and Jonathon Hayes.

Ian Moore came close for Hartlepool with a cross shot that rattled the far post before Ian Henderson missed a glorious chance to turn the game in our favour. After neat build up play involving Mark Little and Dean Bowditch, Henderson looked certain to score after finding space but shot over the bar.

At the other end, Moore missed an equally good chance but wasted it by side footing wide of the mark.

But despite another late Henderson chance, the Cobblers had to settle for a point at Sixfields and now face a trip to Gillingham next Saturday as we look for our first win in 2008.

Hartlepool United (H) Preview

The Cobblers welcome Hartlepool United to Sixfields tomorrow afternoon (3pm) as we look to pick up the form again after the 3-0 trouncing at Leeds last week. Hartlepool sit 15th with the Cobblers just a place below in 16th, it promises to be a tight affair as Jonathan Hayes and Mark Little look set to make their debuts.

Team News

Poul Hubertz sits out in the second of his three game suspension games but Giles Coke could start after completing 90 minutes against Southend in the reserves in midweek. Stuart Gray could hand debuts to Mark Little and Jonathon Hayes while Daniel Jones also comes back into contention after completing his one match ban.

Godwin Antwi misses the Sixfields clash through suspension but Danny Wilson welcomes back Ben Clark, Willie Boland and Joel Porter after injury. But Jamie McCunnie and Andy Monkhouse miss out with knee injuries.

The Story So Far…Hartlepool United in 2007/08

Newly promoted Hartlepool got off to a good start in their new surroundings of League One as they responded to an opening day defeat at Luton by winning 2-1 at home to Doncaster and 2-0 at Port Vale.

Goals from Ian Moore, James Brown, Richard Barker and Joel Porter gave the Monkey Hangers a 4-1 win over Oldham to kick start September but they were then beaten at Leeds and held by Swindon. United beat Leyton Orient 4-2 at Brisbane Road but ended the month with a 1-0 home defeat to Walsall.

October began with a 2-2 home draw with Carlisle as Michael Mackay scored a late equaliser. They were beaten at Nottingham Forest (2-1) before seeing off Bristol Rovers by the single goal at Victoria Park. The month ended with defeat as Brighton took the points home in a 2-1 success.

Hartlepool started November at Millwall and a goal from Anthony Sweeney won them the game. A 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield was followed by a draw with Bournemouth away. November ended with two defeats at Gillingham (2-1) and Swansea (1-0).

There was a turn of fortune at the start of December as United saw off Tranmere Rovers 3-1 in a big win at home before an inconsistent month saw a defeat at Yeovil (3-1), victory at home to Crewe (3-0) and a loss at Swindon (2-1). Hartlepool lost out to a late equaliser at home to Leeds on Boxing Day as Jermaine Beckford grabbed the Elland Road club a point before 2007 ended with a draw at home to Leyton Orient.

In their only game of 2008 so far, Hartlepool lost out 4-2 at Carlisle United.

Little is latest Cobblers loan signing

The Cobblers have made their latest move in the January transfer window by snapping up Wolverhampton Wanderers right back Mark Little on a months’ loan. Little, 19, joins fellow Wolves team mate Daniel Jones at Sixfields.

Little has played for England at Under 17, 18 and 19 levels and has already made 32 senior appearances for the midlands club after progressing through their youth academy. He is described as an “attacking right back who enjoys running at his counterparts in the opposition and supplying crosses for the front men.”

Little loan spell will run out after the home game with Leeds United at Sixfields on February 9th and he is available for selection for this weekends’ League One clash with Hartlepool United.

The thought being now that Jason Crowe can make a midfield position his own after moving up the field in recent weeks to good effect, scoring a couple of goals on the way. Crowe has looked strong going forward and with Danny Jackman the only other option to fill in at right back it seems a sensible move by Gray and it’s good to see two young players join the club already in the window.

No Saints 2-1 Red Star Five

No Saints returned from the winter break with a battling performance and a fine win over fellow promoted side Red Star Five. Goals from Abib and Jamie gave us the points in a hard fought win to lift us into the top half of League One.

On a chilly evening in Eastleigh, Red Star began the game with three men so had to call upon help from two Championship players until the other two players turned up! By that time we were in front as Abib took his tally to six for the season early in the game.

We held on till half time at 1-0 but Red Star were getting more and more into the game as it progressed and got a deserved equaliser with around ten minutes left following a string of good saves from Aaron.

But just as it looked like we were out of steam, Jamie stepped up to fire home the winner with just a couple of minutes to spare to hand us a massive three points.

The other results were tight once again and it's going to be a roller coaster season but it's great to be in such a competitive league and having such tight games every week. The fitness after the Christmas food intake wasn't great but hopefully that will improve again as the weeks go on!

The Midweek Review...09/01/08...

A week full of activity ended yesterday when Bradley Johnson finally put pen to paper on a three and a half year deal with Leeds United. Before that, we were soundly beaten at Elland Road by Johnson’s new employers and The Cobblers will be looking to bounce back this weekend as Hartlepool United come to town.

Elland Road was always going to be the toughest away game of the season to overcome and I don’t think even the most optimistic Town fan would have said before the game that they thought we would come away with a result from the game. Without Hubertz and Jones, two key players for us at the moment we were in for it from the off.

Andy Kirk on his own up front is never going to work and although Larkin and Bowditch worked hard to support the Cobblers’ top scorer, we never really threatened the Leeds goal. As soon as Frazer Richardson had danced his merry dance through our midfield and finished well to give them the lead, it was curtains. I thought at half time that our only chance would be if we got the next goal but it never looked like coming.

The Leeds full back ran the length of the field for their second goal from the corner and nobody saw him ghosting in at the back post apart from 1800 Cobblers fans and when Rui Marques flicked the ball home for the second there was no way back. The third just added insult to injury in stoppage time. We had our chances, most notably Hughey’s header but if we’re ever going to get anything from Leeds we would have to take chances when we got them.

Overall a disappointing day out at Elland Road but the atmosphere was the best I’ve heard for a long time in this division. That combined with their players which were quite simply a different class to us will see them promoted this season I’m sure.

I’m happy to report a trouble free day as well as I made the 11 hour round trip, boarded a bus full of Leeds fans to and from the station and got back on the train without a hint of bother. The only grumble was the stewards (a worryingly recurring problem at away games) who threw out a couple of people just for standing up when there’s a stand full of Leeds fans standing for the entire game. It was Forest all over again.

Bradley Johnson finally made the move to Leeds on Tuesday for a fee thought to be around 250,000. Best wishes to Brad for the future and we must now move to bring in the right sort of player, hopefully with some of the money received.

Stuart Gray may well have the funds to make a couple of signings for cash now whilst he’s also looking for loan players to fill the gaps of a small squad. Leicester’s Jonathon Hayes has signed for the rest of the season and he fits the bill in terms of a bit of pace going forward which we certainly lack at the moment. Throw in another forward and a battling midfielder of the Chris Hargreaves ilk and I think we would be well set!

I was surprised to see Sam Aiston being allowed to leave the club as he looked like he deserved a chance from the small amount of times he’s played this season. In a time when we’re lacking a bit of width and creativity it’s a bit of a surprise that Stuart Gray has let him go.

But all being well we’ll have as successful a transfer window as we did last time around as Stuart Gray immediately brought in the likes of Deuchar, Hughes, Robertson, Pearce and Cox last January to keep us up. Cox was apparently on the brink of signing for Swindon the last I heard but if we can nab him from under their noses that would be a tremendous signing!

It’s a busy few weeks ahead but all transfer talk is put on hold as we take on Jeff Stelling’s Monkey Hangers at Sixfields. The classic mid-table battle will ensue and it should be another tight game at Sixfields. With Giles Coke’s return and the possible debut of Jonathon Hayes plus the return of Daniel Jones we should be a much stronger outfit this Saturday than we were at Leeds.

Up the Cobblers!

Danny

Return of the Whites...No Saints vs Red Star Five Preview...

No Saints return to action tonight after a three week winter break to take on fellow promotion friends Red Star Five. Nathan is out for the next few months after he suddenly took his old job in Austria back so the squad is a man down for a while!

But we still have a strong army of 7 available and ready to go as we look to escape the League One drop zone. Red Star Five came up with us last season and last time out in League Two, we pipped them to a pulsating 5-4 win to temporarily take us to the top of the table.

Although we lost out on the last day to Red Star in the title race, we were still both promoted and enjoyed a drink with them at the end of the night. We’ve been chatting to them before games as well so that’s a nice change to have a laugh whatever happens in the game and tonight should be as competitive a game as we’ll have this season.

A win would lift definitely lift us out of the bottom two and also take us above Red Star so all to play for again as we resume the season tonight!

Johnson completes move to Leeds

Bradley Johnson has completed his move to Leeds United after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for the midfielder this afternoon. Johnson has been subject to plenty of rumours since the transfer window opened last week but has now put pen to paper with the Elland Road club who beat the Cobblers 3-0 on Saturday.

Johnson began his career as a youth scholar at Cambridge United before Colin Calderwood brought him to Sixfields and took up the remainder of that scholarship. He spent spells on loan at Ebbsfleet United and Stevenage Borough before finally getting a chance in the first team under Stuart Gray.

Johnson hit vital goals in the fight to avoid the drop last season including the winning goal in the 2-1 win over eventual league winners Scunthorpe United. This season, he has scored five times for the Cobblers with his most recent strike coming in the 4-1 home win against Bournemouth at the end of December.

Stuart Gray was disappointed to lose Johnson but understood the players’ desire to push himself at a higher level whilst also saying that he has transfer targets in which he can possibly use some of the money from the deal.

Gray said, “We are disappointed to lose Bradley but he moves on with our best wishes and we now have got to move on ourselves. I want to take this club forward but we’ve got a good fee for him and we didn’t want to stand in his way.”

“Everything I asked of Bradley he took on board and he has definitely improved as a player. He’d probably admit himself that he has been a little bit inconsistent at times this season but credit to him he’s stuck at it and we were probably just starting to see the best of him.”

“The money we’ve got from selling Bradley will hopefully allow me to strengthen the team in other areas and at the minute I am waiting on phone calls from other managers with answers on players we are interested in.”

“I will only bring players to this football club if they will improve us and they have to be the right players. We are looking at both loans and permanent signings.”

Aiston makes permanent Wrexham switch

Sam Aiston has made his loan move to Wrexham a permanent one this afternoon as the Cobblers midfielder makes the switch to the Recreation Ground. Aiston, 31, has been on loan at the League Two club for the last couple of months and Brian Little has snapped him up on a free transfer.

Aiston joined the Cobblers from Tranmere Rovers in 2006 when John Gorman made him one of his first signings as manager. He went on to make 25 appearances for the club with ten of those appearances coming from the bench.

He has started seven times for the League Two bottom club, coming off the bench once, and will be hoping to help them out of their relegation dog fight in the second half of the season.

Cobblers sign Leicester winger Hayes

The Cobblers have moved to sign Leicester City winger Jonathon Hayes on loan until the end of the season. The 21-Year-old joins after seeing his first team chances limited at the Walker Stadium this season and will be good cover for when Daniel Jones returns to Wolves at the end of this month.

The pacy winger began his career with the Reading academy and whilst at the Madeski Stadium had loan spells with Forest Green Rovers, MK Dons and Chesterfield before moving to Leicester last year.

Hayes had made just seven Championship appearances this season for Leicester, most of which have come from the bench while he was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 F.A. Cup reverse at Southampton.

Leeds United 3-0 Northampton Town

The Cobblers were comfortably beaten at Elland Road as Leeds United dominated Stuart Gray’s side and showed their class as goals from Frazer Richardson, Rui Marques and Curtis Weston sealed the win.

It was a strangely quick journey up from Southampton to Leeds despite it being a five hour trek north and after a late night on Friday it was nice to drift in and out of sleep without any train changes. The comfortable journey to Elland Road continued upon arrival in Leeds as I was immediately pointed in the right direction of the football special buses and boarded one of them to be met by a bus full of Leeds fans and not a single Cobbler!

It was quite surreal standing outside Elland Road and knowing that we were playing a league game there. On the day of the F.A. Cup Third Round it had all the makings of a cup tie and Northampton Town facing a big team in Round Three. Unfortunately that’s how it remained through the game as well as we were totally outclassed.

A pre-match pint in the cramped bar under the stand was enjoyed before we took our seats in the lower tier of the Cobblers fans’ base, tucked away in the corner of Elland Road and with loud section of home fans to our left.

Giles Coke and Ian Henderson were surprise names on the team sheet as they both made the bench following injury problems. The Cobblers started with Colin Larkin and Dean Bowditch helping out a five man wall of a midfield and Andy Kirk playing the lone striker. Poul Hubertz and Daniel Jones missed out through suspension.

From the off, Leeds were on the front foot and the lively Jermaine Beckford hit a shot from range that Mark Hughes did well to block. Beckford was again in the thick of the action minutes later as he broke free from his marker and looked all the way like he was going to put the home side in front but Mark Bunn got down low to block the shot. Tore Andre Flo followed up but Brett Johnson got back to clear the ball off the line.

In a rare attack for the Cobblers, Colin Larkin got free on the right and put in a low cross but Leeds keeper Casper Ankergren parried the ball to safety. We were holding on pretty well at the back and looked organised as half time approached but just before the break fell behind.

Frazer Richardson broke from the back and was given far too much time to pick his spot from long range and hit a right footed shot that sailed past Bunn and gave Leeds the advantage going into half time.

As the second half got going it was more of the same and Leeds soon doubled their advantage. A left sided corner was swung deep for the advancing Andrew Hughes who volleyed the ball back across goal for Rui Marques to deflect in with a good reaction header.

If we were up against it at 1-0, it was virtually game over at 2-0 but we did at least have a couple of chances to get into the game. Chances in a game like that are few and far between and must be taken when they arrive so we knew it wasn’t go to be our day when our best chance was headed over by Mark Hughes. Ian Henderson and Giles Coke, finally making his first appearance for the club, came off the bench and Henderson hit a good effort wide from a Dean Bowditch cross but that was as good as it got for the Cobblers.

Beckford almost got his second with around fifteen minutes to go with a free kick to crashed against the cross bar before Andy Holt broke clear and had a shot deflected wide late on.

But Leeds extended their lead in stoppage time as substitute Curtis Weston shrugged off the challenge of Hughes and finished left footed past Bunn to seal an impressive win and stop their recent run of defeats in style.

For the Cobblers we were simply outplayed and Leeds are a different class to us, which was apparent from the off. Simple things like giving the ball away shouldn’t be happening against any side but chances really have to be taken in a game where we’re not getting many. Hubertz was missed, as was the width that Daniel Jones creates on the left but all in all we just didn’t have anything to match Leeds.

The journey home dragged on as someone had apparently “stolen a cable” from the rail tracks further down the line. Who would want to steal a cable is beyond me but it meant that the journey was delayed and I got home at around midnight, some six hours after leaving Leeds station!

At least it was another ground chalked off the list and something tells me I won’t be getting another chance to visit Elland Road any time in the near future!

Destination: Leeds

As 2008 kicks in and we get back to some sort of routine fixtures-wise, we head to the biggest club outside the top two tiers of English football tomorrow afternoon as Elland Road welcomes the Cobblers and our band of around 1,500 fans.

Let’s face the facts. Leeds are a massive club and will more than likely be promoted this season which would still be a massive achievement after getting themselves up from a -15 points start into the playoff positions. Northampton Town are a relatively small club and consolidation represents a decent season this time around whilst a finish in the top half would be considered great progress.

It’s days like tomorrow that we have to enjoy while they’re here and take in one of the biggest grounds and crowds in the country. It’s like when Manchester City played their trade in our league a few seasons ago and you could arguably say the same about Nottingham Forest.

I’m facing a huge haul of a near 10 hour round trip from Southampton to be at the game and it’s kind of got the feeling of a cup tie about it despite neither club being involved in the cup any more (the reason why this game goes ahead tomorrow of course).

But its days like tomorrow that make football what it is. Once in a while, a big club falls to a depth they know nothing about. Indeed a lad I briefly played Sunday League Football with didn’t have a clue who we were whilst my boss, a Southampton fan, didn’t even know we had a football team!

Maybe I’m hyping it up too much, maybe not, but it’s the type of David vs. Goliath game that comes along now and again and we have to make the most of the day. Saying that, Oldham went and got a result there the other day so why not us too? One reason is that they surely can’t lose three in a row whilst Cobblers Law states that any out of form side does well against us!

But whatever the result, we have to just hope we give it a real go and let the Leeds fans know just who Northampton Town are!

Up The Cobblers!

Johnson in talks with Leeds

The latest twist in the Brad Johnson transfer story has involved a bid from tomorrow’s opponents Leeds United as Dennis Wise is said to have had a bid of around £250,000 accepted by the Cobblers.

A deal with an undisclosed Championship side fell through during the week and Leeds are set to come in for the midfielder. With the sides meeting at Elland Road, it is not known as yet whether Johnson will be available for selection for the Cobblers for the game.

Talks are set to continue over the next couple of days and the club have said that should it still be the case that Johnson is contracted to the club on Saturday afternoon we would made a decision about his involvement in the game at the time.

Leeds United (A) Preview

The Cobblers make the trip to Leeds tomorrow with the Yorkshire men on a run of two straight defeats as their rise to the summit of League One hit a stumbling block over the New Year period. Stuart Gray’s side were held at home to Millwall on Tuesday afternoon thanks to a last minute equaliser but will be hoping to cause a shock at Elland Road.

Team News

The Cobblers are without Daniel Jones for the trip through suspension. The Wolves loan man signed an extension to his current deal yesterday but he is up to five bookings for the season and misses out. Brad Johnson returns to the squad after a deal with a possible transfer to a Championship club fell through this week. But Giles Coke and Ian Henderson are still not ready to return and Chris Doig is out long term.

Matt Heath and Alan Thompson are both suspended fro Leeds and Jonathon Howson is missing with a knee injury. Leon Constantine is still out with a broken arm but new signing Sebastian Sorsa could feature.

The Story So Far…Leeds United in 2007/08

After a fifteen point points deduction before they even kicked a ball, Leeds were up against it from the off but have incredibly fought back to occupy a playoff place by the half way mark in the season.

United stormed out of the blocks and won their opening seven League One games including a last gasp win at Nottingham Forest as the prolific Jermaine Beckford scored in the 89th minute to give them a City Ground win. The 100% start to the season was ended with a 1-1 draw at Gillingham but at least they were back onto plus points by mid September.

At the start of October, Leeds beat Oldham 1-0 to continue their unbeaten run of form as Ian Westlake scored in stoppage time to seal the win. Another late winner, this time from Mark de Vries saw off Yeovil just four days later before Leyton Orient became only the second team to take points off them with a 1-1 draw at Elland Road. The month ended with victories over Brighton (1-0) and Millwall (4-2) and the club was in a good position going into November.

November began with Leeds’ first defeat of the season as they were beaten at Carlisle. Beckford put Leeds in front in the first half but goals from Simon Hackney, Joe Garner and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson sent them crashing to their first loss of the campaign. Bouncing back a week later with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth, they then went on to see off Swindon 2-1. The month ended with a surprise 1-0 defeat at strugglers Cheltenham Town.

As the winter set in through December, Leeds took seven points from their opening three games of the month, with wins over Port Vale and Huddersfield followed by a 1-1 draw at Walsall. A single Jonathon Howson goal late in the day was enough to see off Bristol Rovers before they left it late again on Boxing Day to draw at Hartlepool United. 2007 ended with a 3-2 reverse at fellow promotion chasers Swansea before a surprise 3-1 home defeat to Oldham began 2008 on Tuesday.

Leeds occupy fifth place in the League One table at the moment and will be looking to bounce back quickly from two defeats in a row.

Jones extends Cobblers deal

The Cobblers have extended the loan spell of Daniel Jones from Wolves by a further month after Stuart Gray agreed a deal to keep the defender. Jones’ original loan deal was due to expire after the Millwall game but he has now been given the chance to stay at Sixfields until the end of January.

Jones initially joined the Cobblers from Wolves in the summer on a six month loan and it looked like Mick McCarthy wanted the player back in his squad at the end of the deal. But Gray has acted fast to hold onto the youngster and was delighted to extend Jones’ stay.

Gray said, “Daniel has extended his loan spell and that is a major boost for us. Dean Bowditch extended his loan spell just before Christmas as well and we are very grateful to both Wolves and Ipswich for allowing us to hold on to both Daniel and Dean for a bit longer.”

Jones is suspended for the trip to Leeds at the weekend but will be back in contention for the home game with Hartlepool United the following week. The current loan will end after the Leyton Orient home game on January 25th.

Happy New Year...and the ladle returns!

Happy New Year everyone, just a quick update on our events of New Year's Eve this year. After last year's ladle shouting mayhem, the cooking implement came into show again this time around as Dave snuck it into a couple of photos early in the night!

We were at Dave and Martha's place for a few glasses of wine and some chinese food from our local restaurant down the road and had a nice, relaxing evening inside as 2008 came closer.
I created a photo montage of our crazy year that you can see here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCZT5sPdk4M

After we'd watched that and reminisced about an eventful 2007 it was time to welcome in the new year and going out to the balcony we were treated to a superb array of fireworks from around Southampton. From the third floor vangtage point we could see six or seven displays all at once and probably had one of the best views in Southampton!

So 2008 comes in with a quiet evening in the end but it was cheap and cheerful with most of the drinks provided by our respective work places all we had to pay out for was the chinese! Ti made a yummy punch (left) to add something different to the collection of wine!

We ended the night in front of the film "Sabrina" but none of us managed to sit through the opening half an hour and we fell asleep in the early stages!

So a really cool opening to 2008 and hopefully more memories will be made in the next twelve months.

The Midweek Review...02/01/08...

Plenty to cover in this week’s Midweek Review as the Cobblers hit back from a dismal defeat on Boxing Day to record four points from the next two games. The transfer window is now officially open as well and it’s all set to be a busy month for the club.

The performance at Doncaster seemed pretty dismal and the game at Huddersfield to follow it was one of the last things we needed as we tried to put it to the back of our minds. With a poor record at the Galpharm Stadium and going a goal down on the stroke of half time it all pointed towards a second defeat in a row.

But full credit to the players for fighting back once again and the work of Poul Hubertz was again said to be the major factor in the turn around. Goals are being shared around now as Andy Kirk hits a bit of a drought and it’s good to see the likes of Jason Crowe adding a couple of goals to his tally over Christmas.

Hubertz will, of course, miss the next three games through suspension after the red card against his former club yesterday afternoon. The big Dane will be very much missed and it’s frustrating for both the player and the side that his season has been a bit stop/start. Hoobs has an ability that we’ve been missing for a long time in that he can hold up play when we’re in front and keep the ball at the right end of the pitch from our point of view and we don’t seem to have anyone else able to match that at the moment.

The worrying thing at the moment is looking at the bench that Stuart Gray has to choose from in time of need and it lacking that little something that can change a game when things are going wrong. The squad is getting thinner by the day with injuries and suspensions piling up and the Christmas period is quite a struggle for the smaller squads in the league.

The transfer window now comes into play and Brad Johnson is the first to officially be approached. Johnson was left out of the Millwall game and looks set to join a Championship side for a “substantial” amount of money. It’s a shame that we would lose someone of Johnson’s quality but a big sum would be a huge boost to the club at a time when new blood is needed. We may even be able to bring in a couple of players just with the money the midfielder brings in as the wage budget also increases.

As for other deals, expected offers for Mark Bunn and Jason Crowe haven’t been made as yet according to Stuart Gray but the rumour mill is already linking one or both of them with Colin Calderwood at Forest. In Bunn’s case, I think most Cobblers fans would agree that if a good enough offer were to come in then we couldn’t stand in his way at his age and after already being loyal to the club thus far. Crowe would be another major loss to the side after recently providing that attacking spark we were missing earlier in the season.

But it’s just a time of holding on and seeing what happens but January is certainly set to be a busy month for the Cobblers and by the time February comes around we could be looking at a very different squad then the one we’re seeing now!
The eagerly anticipated trip to Leeds comes around on Saturday and it’s a chance to really mix with the big boys of the league. Chants of “you’re not famous any more” or others to that effect will probably be shouted from the Cobblers corner of Elland Road but the fact is that Leeds are a massive club and they will more than likely be promoted this season.

The worst thing to happen at Leeds from our point of view was their defeat to Oldham yesterday. They’ll be fired up after that turn around and certainly not taking us for granted as they may have done before. But whatever happens, it’s another chance to go to a new ground and take in and another big crowd to play in front of.

So Happy New Year to everyone and let’s hope for some good times in 2008!

Up The Cobblers!

"Substantial bid" made for Johnson

The Cobblers have revealed that a “substantial bid” has been made for midfielder Brad Johnson. Johnson has been the topic of transfer talk for a couple of weeks leading up to the transfer window and it appears talks are now taking place with a Championship club, thought to be Coventry City or Leicester.

Johnson signed for the club from Cambridge United in May 2005 and has since made over 50 appearances for the club either side of loan spells at Ebbsfleet United and Stevenage Borough. It was under Stuart Gray when Johnson really began to shine at the end of last season, helping the club to League One safety and scoring crucial goals including the Bank Holiday Monday winner against champions Scunthorpe United at Sixfields.

With one firm bid made and other interest apparent, it seems just a matter of when and not if Johnson will leave Sixfields in the transfer window and it now remains to be seen how substantial the bid is!

Northampton Town 1-1 Millwall

A late, late equaliser from Gary Alexander gave Millwall a share of the spoils at Sixfields as the Cobblers were pegged back in dramatic style right at the death. The game also saw Poul Hubertz and Millwall’s Neil Harris sent off ten minutes from time.

Brad Johnson wasn’t considered for selection after the club released a statement saying that a substantial bid had been made from a Championship club for the midfielder. Daniel Jones started his final game for the club before moving back to Wolves after a successful loan spell while Dean Bowditch was recalled to the starting line up. Ryan Gilligan was the latest Cobblers player to be added to the injury list and missed the game.

Poul Hubertz had the first effort of the game against his former club but Lenny Pidgeley made the save. The Cobblers kept up the pressure and both Dean Bowditch and Hubertz again went close and Jason Crowe followed up an Andy Kirk effort and headed just wide of the mark.

The Cobblers’ pressure paid off with about ten minutes of the half to play though as Danny Jackman crossed in, Jason Crowe met the ball and forced it back to Bowditch who scored from close range to give us a deserved lead going into the break.

Andy Kirk went close to adding a second of the game for the Cobblers just after half time but his free kick was well saved by Pidgeley before Jason Crowe headed over from a corner.

Pidgeley was called into action once again minutes later as Daniel Jones curled a free kick towards goal but the former Chelsea stopper tipped the ball over the bar.

Millwall then started to come into the game and Mark Bunn had to save well from Neil Harris before Jay Simpson shot just wide. Bunn had to be alert again from half-time substitute Gary Alexander as the visitors looked for the equaliser.

With ten minutes to play, tempers flared and the result was a double red card. First, Neil Harris raised his hands in response to a Hubertz challenge and was given his marching orders and then Hubertz closely followed for his involvement in the fracas.

It looked like we would hold out for another vital three points but in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Alexander converted from close range to give Millwall a point.

So a point a piece in the first game of 2008 and the Cobblers now travel to Elland Road on Saturday for the much anticipated trip to play Leeds United.
