Kirk set for Yeovil move

Cobblers top scorer Andy Kirk is set to join League One rivals Yeovil Town upon completion of a medical this morning. Kirk has hit eight league goals this season but has struggled to find the net as late but it looks like for the second season in a row we’ll be waving goodbye to our top scorer in the January transfer window!

Kirk, 28, has hit 36 goals for the club in 94 starts but Cobblers boss Stuart Gray said that it may be time for a fresh start for both Kirk and Northampton Town.

Gray said, “I think it’s a good move for all parties, It’s not a cost cutting exercise but a footballing decision and it does free up some money for me to strengthen the team.”

“Andy is a goal scorer but for whatever reason he hasn’t scored for us in the league since October. I think he will benefit from a fresh start and he has got some security for his family with a longer contract.”

Gray went on to say that he has two strikers in mind as he looks to replace Kirk and hopes that the deals can be done quickly.

“I am looking to bring two strikers in,” he said. “Hopefully they will both sign before the weekend, one will be a permanent signing and the other a loan.”

“We need someone who has good ball retention and we also need someone in with pace who can run in behind defenders as well. Obviously they need to be able to score goals as well and that is the hardest part of the game.”

“We won’t rush things and get the wrong player, we will keep working to bring in the players we want, but I am hopeful it will be sooner rather than later.”
