Destination: Leeds

As 2008 kicks in and we get back to some sort of routine fixtures-wise, we head to the biggest club outside the top two tiers of English football tomorrow afternoon as Elland Road welcomes the Cobblers and our band of around 1,500 fans.

Let’s face the facts. Leeds are a massive club and will more than likely be promoted this season which would still be a massive achievement after getting themselves up from a -15 points start into the playoff positions. Northampton Town are a relatively small club and consolidation represents a decent season this time around whilst a finish in the top half would be considered great progress.

It’s days like tomorrow that we have to enjoy while they’re here and take in one of the biggest grounds and crowds in the country. It’s like when Manchester City played their trade in our league a few seasons ago and you could arguably say the same about Nottingham Forest.

I’m facing a huge haul of a near 10 hour round trip from Southampton to be at the game and it’s kind of got the feeling of a cup tie about it despite neither club being involved in the cup any more (the reason why this game goes ahead tomorrow of course).

But its days like tomorrow that make football what it is. Once in a while, a big club falls to a depth they know nothing about. Indeed a lad I briefly played Sunday League Football with didn’t have a clue who we were whilst my boss, a Southampton fan, didn’t even know we had a football team!

Maybe I’m hyping it up too much, maybe not, but it’s the type of David vs. Goliath game that comes along now and again and we have to make the most of the day. Saying that, Oldham went and got a result there the other day so why not us too? One reason is that they surely can’t lose three in a row whilst Cobblers Law states that any out of form side does well against us!

But whatever the result, we have to just hope we give it a real go and let the Leeds fans know just who Northampton Town are!

Up The Cobblers!
