Rushden and Diamonds 0-3 Northampton Town

The Cobblers took home the Maunsell Cup yesterday as goals from Bradley Johnson, Ian Henderson and Colin Larkin grabbed the goals that eased us to a 2-0 win at Nene Park.

After Andy Kirk had an early effort ruled out for offside, Johnson hammered a 25 yard effort past Diamonds keeper Paul Bastock. Seven minutes before half time we were two up as Ian Henderson continued his good pre-season by finishing from close range. The scoring was complete when Colin Larkin converted a cross from the Cobblers’ new signing from Millwall, Poul Hubertz.

Daniel Jones played 56 minutes of his debut while Chris Doig and Brett Johnson also getting a run out in the final game of our pre-season.

Following the heavy defeats to Championship sides West Bromwich Albion and Wolves, it was a welcome victory and although the Maunsell Cup isn’t exactly the most recognised of trophies to win, anything we take from the Diamonds is a good thing!

So the pre-season comes to an end and we’re now under a week away from the big kick off!

UE San Jose 1-3 Cobblers
SD Portmany 0-5 Cobblers
Kettering Town 0-1 Cobblers
Cobblers 1-1 Coventry City
Cobblers 1-5 West Bromwich Albion
