Russell joins Cobblers as Aiston departs...

There was movement by Stuart Gray in the transfer window this afternoon as Sam Aiston left Sixfields to join Burton Albion on loan while Bristol City midfielder Alex Russell joins the club also on a loan deal.

Aiston, 30, has seen his first team opportunities limited this season and joins the Blue Square Premier League club on a two-month deal.

Meanwhile coming into the club is Alex Russell. The 34-year-old midfielder joins the Cobblers on a months’ loan. Stuart Gray told the official website, “Alex has quality and will bring some experience to the squad. He has been there and done it at this level, and he will be a big help to the young players we have here.”

Russell began his career at Burscough but found his feet in the league with Rochdale. Spending four years at Spotland, Russell made over 100 appearances for the club before moving to Cambridge United in 1998 on a free transfer. Scoring 8 times in 72 starts for The U’s, he then signed for Torquay United in his most successful spell in the game. Russell went on to make over 150 appearances for the club, scoring 23 times. He joined Bristol City in 2005 and helped them to promotion to the Championship last season.

So with just a few hours left of the transfer window, it’s one in and one out so far. Not many Town fans will be disappointed with the departure of Aiston while Russell’s addition to the squad adds vital experience to the young squad.
